The modified electrodes were applied as both the anode and cathode to investigate their treatment capacity and electrochemical performance. Carbon paper anodes were modified using TiO<sub>2<\/sub>-HX@MWCNT-COOH-Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>\u00a0composite. Activated carbon powders originating from Bambuseae were used as the low-cost catalyst for the carbon felt cathode. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer\u2013Emmett\u2013Teller (BET) techniques. The electrochemical properties of the MFCs were investigated by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). RESULTS: The highest average removal efficiencies of COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD<sub>5<\/sub>\u00a0(5-day\u00a0biochemical\u00a0oxygen\u00a0demand), NH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>\u00a0(ammonium), NH<sub>3<\/sub><sup>\u2212<\/sup>\u00a0(nitrate), TSS (total suspended solids), and VSS (volatile suspended solids) were 94 \u00b1 3% (33 kgCOD<sub>rem<\/sub>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), 89 \u00b1 1% (12 kgBOD<sub>rem<\/sub>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), 87 \u00b1 1% (0.24 kgNH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>-N<sub>rem<\/sub>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), 74 \u00b1 3% (0.05 kgNO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>\u2212<\/sup>-N\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), 79 \u00b1 2% (1 kgCOD<sub>rem<\/sub>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), and 65 \u00b1 3% (0.73 kgCOD<sub>rem<\/sub>\/m<sup>3<\/sup>.d), respectively. The highest average power density of 30 \u00b1 5\u00a0W\/m<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0was obtained when treating vegetable oil industry wastewater. The highest average coulombic efficiency (CE) of 85 \u00b1 3% and energy efficiency (EE) of 35 \u00b1 2% were achieved. The EIS results showed that the high conductivity and large unique surface area significantly enhanced the charge transfer efficiency on the electrode surface.
