Four different designs were tested. The highest ammonium and nitrate removal rates (94 gN\u00b7m<sup>\u22123<\/sup>\u00b7d<sup>\u22121<\/sup>\u00a0and 43 gN\u00b7m<sup>\u22123<\/sup>\u00b7d<sup>\u22121<\/sup>, respectively) were reached by combining an aerobic zone with an electrified anoxic zone. The standards of effluent quality suitable for hydroponics were met at low energy cost (8.3 \u00d7 10<sup>\u22122<\/sup>\u00a0kWh\u00b7gN<sup>\u22121<\/sup>).
