Segons l\u2019Ag\u00e8ncia Internacional de l\u2019Energia, el 2014 el 4% del consum mundial d\u2019electricitat es va utilitzar per extreure, distribuir i tractar aigua. Les projeccions indiquen que aquest percentatge es podria doblar el 2040, degut a l\u2019increment de la demanda de plantes de dessalinitzaci\u00f3 i de depuradores d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals m\u00e9s eficients. Cal, doncs, desenvolupar i implementar de manera urgent processos de tractament d\u2019aigua que siguin m\u00e9s sostenibles des del punt de vista ambiental.<\/p>\n<p>La majoria de les depuradores urbanes d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals actuals realitzen un tractament convencional de fangs activats (en angl\u00e8s, conventional activated sludge o CAS), amb tancs de decantaci\u00f3, reactors biol\u00f2gics on s\u2019oxida la mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica, i sistemes d\u2019aeraci\u00f3 i recirculaci\u00f3. Moltes tamb\u00e9 incorporen un proc\u00e9s de digesti\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bia dels fangs decantats que permet produir biog\u00e0s i, d\u2019aquesta manera, recuperar part de l\u2019energia consumida. En les darreres d\u00e8cades s\u2019ha investigat l\u2019optimitzaci\u00f3 d\u2019aquest proc\u00e9s a trav\u00e9s de la substituci\u00f3 de la decantaci\u00f3 prim\u00e0ria per un proc\u00e9s biol\u00f2gic d\u00b4alta c\u00e0rrega. \u00c9s l\u2019anomenat tractament d\u2019alt rendiment de fangs activats (en angl\u00e8s, high-rate activated sludge o HRAS); d\u2019alguna manera, un proc\u00e9s de depuraci\u00f3 \u201caccelerat\u201d, capa\u00e7 d\u2019eliminar m\u00e9s mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica i de recuperar m\u00e9s energia. Tot i aix\u00ed, encara ens manca con\u00e8ixer el HRAS amb m\u00e9s profunditat per garantir-ne l\u2019estabilitat, i implementar-lo a escala real i de manera generalitzada.    <\/p>\n<p>Joan Canals, amb una llarga traject\u00f2ria professional en el sector de l\u2019aigua, coneixia b\u00e9 aquesta mancan\u00e7a quan va iniciar la seva tesi doctoral. Per aix\u00f2 va decidir estudiar els diferents par\u00e0metres que intervenen en l\u2019estabilitat d\u2019un proc\u00e9s HRAS i permetrien optimitzar-lo. El treball experimental es va desenvolupar a la depuradora de Montorn\u00e8s del Vall\u00e8s (Barcelona), en una planta pilot HRAS capa\u00e7 de tractar 35m3 d\u2019aigua per dia i composada per dos reactors biol\u00f2gics i dos decantadors primaris que s\u2019operaven de manera alterna. An HRAS pilot plant with two biological reactors and two clarifiers (operated alternatively) was designed and constructed to treat 35m<sup>3<\/sup> of water per day. L\u2019investigador va monitoritzar el funcionament de la planta amb diferents cabals durant 497 dies per mitj\u00e0 d\u2019un sistema digital. Els par\u00e0metres operacionals estudiats van ser l\u2019oxigen dissolt, el potencial d\u2019oxidaci\u00f3-reducci\u00f3 i els cabals d\u2019entrada, sortida i recirculaci\u00f3. Tamb\u00e9 es va determinar de manera cont\u00ednua el contingut de s\u00f2lids en suspensi\u00f3 a l\u2019influent, al reactor biol\u00f2gic, a l\u2019efluent i al flux de recirculaci\u00f3. Finalment, es varen realitzar simulacions del proc\u00e9s per avaluar-ne la seva robustesa i escalabilitat. Finally, he carried out simulations to assess the process robustness and feasibility.      <\/p>\n<p>Els resultats obtinguts demostren que l&#8217;HRAS pot ser un proc\u00e9s eficient i estable, amb una alta capacitat d\u2019eliminaci\u00f3 de contaminants i un baix consum d\u2019energia. Aix\u00ed, el HRAS presenta una millor eliminaci\u00f3 de diversos contaminants (compostos de nitrogen i f\u00f2sfor) respecte al decantador primari, amb taxes d&#8217;eliminaci\u00f3 que estan relacionades amb les concentracions de nutrients a l&#8217;entrada. Un resultat destacable \u00e9s que l&#8217;eliminaci\u00f3 de nitrogen i f\u00f2sfor mostra correlacions positives amb la demanda qu\u00edmica d&#8217;oxigen (DQO) total i la fracci\u00f3 particulada, i fa palesa la import\u00e0ncia dels processos d&#8217;adsorci\u00f3, independentment de l&#8217;oxidaci\u00f3 de la DQO. El HRAS tamb\u00e9 presenta un baix consum espec\u00edfic d&#8217;oxigen (SOC) per a diversos par\u00e0metres com la DQO total i soluble, i la demanda bioqu\u00edmica d&#8217;oxigen en 5 dies (DBO5), indicant una elevada efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica. L\u2019an\u00e0lisi del proc\u00e9s a llarg termini indica que la millor via per a l&#8217;eliminaci\u00f3 de nitrogen en l\u2019etapa seg\u00fcent de tractament \u00e9s la nitrificaci\u00f3\/desnitrificaci\u00f3 complementada amb l\u2019oxidaci\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bia de l\u2019amoni (anammox) a la l\u00ednia de retorn. A m\u00e9s, s&#8217;observa que l&#8217;HRAS t\u00e9 una efici\u00e8ncia energ\u00e8tica m\u00e9s alta a concentracions d&#8217;influent elevades, amb un consum d&#8217;oxigen espec\u00edfic influenciat per la concentraci\u00f3 de l&#8217;influent i la seva biodegradabilitat.     <\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;impacte potencial d\u2019aquests resultats \u00e9s molt alt. Si es dugu\u00e9s a terme un proc\u00e9s HRAS juntament amb un proc\u00e9s anammox a la l\u00ednia de retorn, s\u2019arribaria a reduir el 40% del consum d\u2019electricitat d\u2019una depuradora d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals i el 34% del volum dels reactors. Aix\u00f2 nom\u00e9s comportaria incrementar en un 11% el volum del reactor de la digesti\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bia (a causa de l\u2019augment de la generaci\u00f3 de biog\u00e0s). Unes xifres significatives que encoratgen a seguir treballant per escalar el proc\u00e9s i implementar-lo a escala real.   <\/p>\n<p>Aquesta tesi ha estat dirigida pel Dr. H\u00e8ctor Moncl\u00fas, la Dra. Maria Mart\u00edn i la Dra. Alba Cabrera del grup de recerca Laboratori d\u2019Enginyeria Qu\u00edmica i Ambiental (LEQUIA) de la Universitat de Girona. El treball experimental s\u2019ha dut a terme en el marc d\u2019un projecte de R+D industrial de l\u2019empresa GS INIMA Environment co-finan\u00e7at pel CDTI.
