Actualment, hi ha diverses tecnologies disponibles al mercat per eliminar amoni, per\u00f2 totes consumeixen molta energia i, conseq\u00fcentment, s\u00f3n molt cares. Les tecnologies electromicrobianes (en angl\u00e8s, METs) utilitzen microorganismes electro-actius i s\u00f3n una alternativa biotecnol\u00f2gica de baix consum energ\u00e8tic per convertir l\u2019amoni en nitrogen gas (N<sub>2<\/sub>). Tot i aix\u00ed, encara fa falta realitzar recerca i desenvolupament industrial per assolir resultats competitius a escala real. La tesi doctoral<strong>\u00a0\u201cBioelectrochemical systems for ammonium removal in contaminated water\u201d de Miguel Osset \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>\u00a0t\u00e9 com a objectiu contribuir al desenvolupament de dues de les principals METs d&#8217;eliminaci\u00f3 d&#8217;amoni: la nitrificaci\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica i la combinaci\u00f3 de nitrificaci\u00f3 aer\u00f2bica amb desnitrificaci\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La\u00a0<strong>nitrificaci\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e9s una tecnologia molt prometedora per eliminar NH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup>. Tot i aix\u00f2, els mecanismes darrere d&#8217;aquest proc\u00e9s no han estat completament dilucidats. Miguel Osset va construir, operar i estudiar un sistema bioelectroqu\u00edmic nitrificant (niBES; sigles en angl\u00e8s) durant 550 dies. Es va descobrir que el microorganisme dominant al niBES era un nitrificant (Achromobacter sp.), i que la hidroxilamina (NH2OH) i el nitrit (NO2-), dos intermediaris de la nitrificaci\u00f3, s\u00f3n compostos electroactius. En general, aquests resultats suggereixen que l&#8217;amoni es va transformar en nitrogen gas (N2) mitjan\u00e7ant un proc\u00e9s que combina l&#8217;oxidaci\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica de NH4+, la desnitrificaci\u00f3 i, menys, l&#8217;anammox.<\/p>\n<p>D&#8217;altra banda, es va construir un nou\u00a0<strong>sistema bioelectroqu\u00edmic (BES; sigles en angl\u00e8s) d&#8217;eliminaci\u00f3 d&#8217;amoni, l&#8217;e-biofiltre,<\/strong>\u00a0integrant la desnitrificaci\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica en un biofiltre percolador. Es van utilitzar els e-biofiltres per transformar l&#8217;NH4+ present en aigua sint\u00e8tica d&#8217;aq\u00fcicultura en nitrat (NO3-) i N2, cosa que va permetre reutilitzar aquesta aigua per a cultiu hidrop\u00f2nic.
