Per lluitar contra els seus efectes, els grans pa\u00efsos emissors han acordat 1) reduir les seves emissions de CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0i 2) desenvolupar tecnologies neutres en carboni per produir biocombustibles i altres productes. S\u2019estan, doncs, fent grans esfor\u00e7os per investigar tant la captura i emmagatzematge de CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0com la seva conversi\u00f3 per mitj\u00e0 de processos qu\u00edmics, electroqu\u00edmics, biol\u00f2gics o inorg\u00e0nics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Les\u00a0<strong>tecnologies microbianes electroqu\u00edmiques<\/strong>\u00a0(METs) s\u00f3n una alternativa prometedora per capturar i reduir\u00a0<em>in situ<\/em>\u00a0el CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0a trav\u00e9s de l\u2019\u00fas d\u2019electricitat renovable. Microorganismes cultivats en condicions autotr\u00f2fiques usen CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0com a acceptor d\u2019electrons i un el\u00e8ctrode aporta electrons en forma d\u2019electricitat. En aquest proc\u00e9s, conegut com a electros\u00edntesi microbiana (MES), es produeixen diferents compostos en funci\u00f3 de les possibilitats metab\u00f2liques dels microorganismes presents al sistema. El potencial d\u2019aquesta via \u00e9s alt: un cultiu enriquit de microorganismes electroactius seleccionats pot fer possible la transformaci\u00f3 del CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0en compostos d\u2019alt valor afegit. Tanmateix, encara ens manquen coneixements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aquesta tesis doctoral va investigar procediments operacionals fiables per monitoritzar el rendiment de les METs en la producci\u00f3 de substrats per aplicacions econ\u00f2micament viables. Es van inocular els c\u00e0todes de dos dissenys diferents de sistemes bioelectroqu\u00edmics (BES),\u00a0<strong>tubular i de placa plana<\/strong>, amb un cultiu enriquit d\u2019una soca carboxidotr\u00f2fica i es va operar fins a la\u00a0<strong>conversi\u00f3 estable del CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0en acetat, etanol i petites quantitats de butirat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Els resultats obtinguts estan publicats en revistes cient\u00edfiques internacionals (G<em>reen Chemistry<\/em>, 21, Issue 3, 2019, 684-691) i s\u00f3n molt valuosos pel desenvolupament de les METs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>El BES tubular va aconseguir una producci\u00f3 concomitant d&#8217;etanol i acetat, que \u00e9s clau per desencadenar la producci\u00f3 de carboxilats i alcohols de cadena de carboni m\u00e9s llargues i complexes en fermentadors acoplats. El BES de placa plana va mostrar una producci\u00f3 constant d&#8217;acetat, aix\u00ed com una alta resili\u00e8ncia davant d\u2019episodis operatius inesperats.<\/li>\n<li>Les efici\u00e8ncies cul\u00f2mbiques i les taxes de producci\u00f3 generals van ser m\u00e9s altes en el disseny de placa plana. Aix\u00f2 suggereix la necessitat de millorar la seva maniobrabilitat identificant els valors llindar de par\u00e0metres clau que actuen d&#8217;interruptors per activar \/ inactivar les rutes metab\u00f2liques d&#8217;inter\u00e8s.<\/li>\n<li>Un disseny de reactor m\u00e9s \u00f2ptim i una alta maduresa de la comunitat electroactiva s\u00f3n claus per obtenir compostos m\u00e9s redu\u00efts i valuosos a partir de CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0i electricitat.<\/li>\n<li>El monitoratge en l\u00ednia dels par\u00e0metres clau (pH, CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0dissolt i pressi\u00f3 parcial d&#8217;hidrogen) va revelar variacions en el senyal de demanda de corrent i valors de pH correlacionats amb l&#8217;esgotament de CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0i la transici\u00f3 entre rutes productores d&#8217;\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic a d&#8217;altres que resulten en la producci\u00f3 d&#8217;etanol. A m\u00e9s, es van desenvolupar noves estrat\u00e8gies d&#8217;inoculaci\u00f3 i alimentaci\u00f3 del reactor basades en l&#8217;enriquiment previ d&#8217;el\u00e8ctrodes amb un biofilm electroactiu i evitant per\u00edodes amb baixa disponibilitat de poder reductor, que van mostrar resultats prometedors i que s&#8217;haurien d&#8217;abordar en futures investigacions sobre la conversi\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica de CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/li>\n<li>La monitoritzaci\u00f3 en l\u00ednia de l&#8217;pH i el consum electr\u00f2nic s\u00f3n variables operatives rellevants per seleccionar de la producci\u00f3 de carboxilats i alcohols, el que obre la porta per desenvolupar nous enfocaments que facilitin el control de les tecnologies electroqu\u00edmiques microbianes durant la conversi\u00f3 bioelectroqu\u00edmica de CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0en biocombustibles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ramiro Blasco<\/strong>\u00a0va desenvolupar la seva tesi doctoral al grup de recerca LEQUIA de la Universitat de Girona sota la supervisi\u00f3 del\u00a0<strong>Dr. Jes\u00fas Colprim, la Dra. Maria Dolors Balaguer\u00a0<\/strong>i el<strong>\u00a0Dr. Sebasti\u00e0 Puig<\/strong>.
