El nitrogen \u00e9s necessari per al creixement de les plantes per\u00f2 si s\u2019aboca en exc\u00e9s provoca la contaminaci\u00f3 de les aig\u00fces i altera els ecosistemes aqu\u00e0tics. En les EDARs convencionals del segle XX el nitrogen s\u2019eliminava de manera majorit\u00e0ria a trav\u00e9s de l\u2019acci\u00f3 combinada de dos tipus de bacteris. Un grup, els dels nitrificants, utilitza oxigen per a oxidar l\u2019amoni a nitrit, que a la vegada s\u2019oxida a nitrat. El segon grup, el dels bacteris desnitrificants, converteix aquestes formes oxidades del nitrogen en nitrogen gas a trav\u00e9s de l\u2019oxidaci\u00f3 de la mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica, que actua com a donant d\u2019electrons. Tanmateix, ambd\u00f3s tractaments presenten una alta demanda de recursos i d\u2019energia: la nitrificaci\u00f3 requereix aeraci\u00f3 i la desnitrificaci\u00f3 requereix l\u2019addici\u00f3 \u00a0externa de mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>El descobriment dels bacteris\u00a0<strong>Anammox<\/strong>\u00a0el 1995 va canviar la nostra comprensi\u00f3 del cicle del nitrogen i va obrir un nou cam\u00ed per a incrementar la sostenibilitat de les depuradores d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals. A difer\u00e8ncia dels bacteris nitrificants, els Anammox s\u00f3n capa\u00e7os de dur a terme l\u2019oxidaci\u00f3 autotr\u00f2fica de l\u2019i\u00f3 amoni. La configuraci\u00f3 m\u00e9s com\u00fa d\u2019un proc\u00e9s Anammox \u00e9s la \u201cnitritaci\u00f3 parcial-anammox\u201d (PNA), en al qual gaireb\u00e9 la meitat de l\u2019amoni d\u2019entrada \u00e9s transformat en nitrit per bacteris oxidants (<em>ammonia-oxidising bacteria<\/em>, AOB) i l\u2019amoni restant \u00e9s oxidat amb bacteris Anammox (AnAOPB), que utilitzen nitrit com a acceptor d\u2019electrons i no necessiten oxigen. Seguint aquesta estrat\u00e8gia, l\u2019anammox ha estat reconegut com una tecnologia viable per assolir un tractament d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals neutre energ\u00e8ticament i amb una millora significativa de l\u2019efici\u00e8ncia en recursos. Aix\u00ed, en comparaci\u00f3 amb el proc\u00e9s convencional de nitrificaci\u00f3-desnitrificaci\u00f3, la combinaci\u00f3 nitritaci\u00f3 parcial-anammox precisa de menys oxigen, amb la conseq\u00fcent reducci\u00f3 de costos d\u2019aeraci\u00f3; redueix la producci\u00f3 de fangs; i no li cal l\u2019addici\u00f3 de mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica per a eliminar nitrogen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Els processos Anammox ja s\u2019han aplicat per tractar aigua abocada a l\u00ednies secund\u00e0ries d\u2019EDARs urbanes, amb un alt contingut en nitrogen i un rati C:N baix. No obstant aix\u00f2, en els darrers anys s\u2019ha incrementat l\u2019inter\u00e8s per implementar processos basats en anammox en la l\u00ednia principal, que cont\u00e9 la majoria del nitrogen. Tanmateix, l\u2019eliminaci\u00f3 autotr\u00f2fica de nitrogen per PNA encara ha d\u2019enfrontar-se a alguns reptes tecnol\u00f2gics importants, com ara un creixement lent dels bacteris anammox (sobretot a baixes temperatures) i la repressi\u00f3 del proc\u00e9s de nitrataci\u00f3. La tesi doctoral \u201c<strong>Operational strategies towards nitritation-anammox implementation for mainstream municipal wastewater treatment<\/strong>\u201d de\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lequia1.reverter.cat\/presentation\/members\/predoctoral-researchers\/item\/1207-tiago-rogerio-vitor-akaboci.html\">Tiago Vitor Akaboci<\/a><\/strong>ha estudiat noves estrat\u00e8gies operacionals per a abordar els reptes esmentats anteriorment amb l\u2019objectiu d\u2019assolir un proc\u00e9s PNA estable en la l\u00ednia principal d\u2019EDARs urbanes. L\u2019autor ha investigat els par\u00e0metres seg\u00fcents: un contingut molt baix d\u2019oxigen dissolt (OD); l\u2019efecte de la temperatura; la influ\u00e8ncia de diferents ratis de carboni inorg\u00e0nic i nitrogen; i la configuraci\u00f3 del reactor (<em>batch<\/em>\u00a0seq\u00fcencial o flux de pist\u00f3).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Els resultats mostren que amb el control de l\u2019OD a nivells extremadament baixos s\u2019assoleix una eliminaci\u00f3 mitjana del nitrogen de 0.37 \u00b1 0.07 kg N\u00b7m<sup>-3<\/sup>\u00b7d<sup>-1<\/sup>\u00a0a 25\u00baC. L\u2019investigador ha demostrat que un baix nivell d\u2019OD no \u00e9s suficient per a una nitritaci\u00f3 completa, ja que la producci\u00f3 de nitrat dels bacteris oxidants del nitrit (en angl\u00e8s, NOB) \u00e9s limitada i el potencial per assolir efici\u00e8ncies d\u2019eliminaci\u00f3 m\u00e9s altes, tamb\u00e9. Val a dir que despr\u00e9s de disminuir la temperatura operacional a 15\u00baC els processos PNA es van mantenir estables durant uns quants dies, per\u00f2 l\u2019operaci\u00f3 de l\u2019activitat anammox a llarg termini es va reduir i va frenar l\u2019eliminaci\u00f3 de nitrogen. Tiago Vitor Akabocci tamb\u00e9 va estudiar la comunitat bacteriana amb t\u00e8cniques moleculars d\u2019alt rendiment. Els grups bacterians dominants pertanyien als g\u00e8neres Planctomycetes, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi i Bacteroidetes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>El grup de recerca LEQUIA de la UdG ha estat pioner en el desenvolupament i l\u2019escalatge de processos PNA per a tractar efluents complexos. Els supervisors de la tesi, el\u00a0<strong>Dr. Jes\u00fas Colprim, el Dr. Ma\u00ebl Ruscalleda<\/strong>\u00a0(actualment a l\u2019empresa Createch360\u00ba) i la\u00a0<strong>Dra. Maria Dolors Balaguer<\/strong>, han aplicat el proc\u00e9s Anammox a efluents de depuradores d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals urbanes i a lixiviats d\u2019abocador.
