Actualment la majoria de les estacions depuradores d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals (EDARs) eliminen aquests compostos a trav\u00e9s dels fangs actius i la digesti\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bica. \u00a0Ambd\u00f3s tractaments presenten mancances rellevants: no s\u00f3n prou eficients per al tractament del nitrogen; comporten un\u00a0<strong>cost econ\u00f2mic\u00a0<\/strong>important (1\/3 del balan\u00e7 energ\u00e8tic de l&#8217;EDAR es destina a l\u2019aeraci\u00f3, indispensable per tractar l\u2019amoni); i moltes vegades requereixen d\u2019un tractament addicional. Per totes aquestes raons, cal explorar noves tecnologies que siguin capaces d&#8217;<strong>eliminar simult\u00e0niament el carboni i el nitrogen\u00a0<\/strong>de les aig\u00fces residuals de manera eficient i sostenible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Una d\u2019aquestes tecnologies s\u00f3n els\u00a0<strong>sistemes bioelectroqu\u00edmics<\/strong>\u00a0(en angl\u00e8s,\u00a0<em>bioelectrochemical systems<\/em>\u00a0o BES), que en els \u00faltims deu anys han despertat un inter\u00e8s creixent per part de la comunitat cient\u00edfica internacional. Els BES combinen processos biol\u00f2gics i electroqu\u00edmics, i es basen en reaccions d\u2019oxidaci\u00f3\/reducci\u00f3 en les quals l\u2019alliberament\/captura d\u2019electrons d\u2019un el\u00e8ctrode est\u00e0 facilitada per microorganismes. En l\u2019\u00e0mbit del tractament d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals podrien oxidar la mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica i l\u2019amoni, i reduir els compostos nitrogenats resultants (nitrits i nitrats) tot produint energia. D\u2019aquesta manera, a m\u00e9s de depurar l\u2019aigua de forma m\u00e9s eficient i sostenible, disminuiria el consum d\u2019electricitat i s\u2019abaratiria tot el proc\u00e9s. El potencial dels BES \u00e9s, doncs, enorme. Tanmateix, encara cal un important treball de R+D perqu\u00e8 la seva implementaci\u00f3 a escala industrial sigui una realitat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La tesi doctoral \u201c<strong>Carbon and nitrogen treatment in industrial wastewaters using bioelectrochemical systems<\/strong>\u201d d\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/lequia1.reverter.cat\/ca\/presentacio\/equip\/investigadors-predoctorals\/item\/192-anna-vilajeliu-pons.html\" rel=\"alternate\">Anna Vilajeliu Pons<\/a>\u00a0s\u2019ha centrat en l\u2019eliminaci\u00f3 simult\u00e0nia de carboni i nitrogen en BES per tractar unes aig\u00fces residuals amb un impacte mediambiental especialment significatiu a Catalunya i a moltes regions d\u2019Europa:<strong>\u00a0els purins<\/strong>. La investigadora ha estudiat diferents bacteris per utilitzar l\u2019el\u00e8ctrode com acceptor d\u2019electrons (bio\u00e0node) i com a donador d\u2019electrons (bioc\u00e0tode) a fi de reduir les altes concentracions de mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica i compostos de nitrogen d\u2019aquestes aig\u00fces. Val a dir que el treball va comptar amb el suport d\u2019un contracte de transfer\u00e8ncia tecnol\u00f2gica amb l\u2019empresa Abengoa Water. Entre els resultats obtinguts destaca un aprofundiment en el coneixement de la tecnologia i de la\u00a0<strong>comunitat microbiana<\/strong>\u00a0involucrada, l\u2019<strong>optimitzaci\u00f3 del tractament de nutrients<\/strong>\u00a0(1.2 kg COD m<sup>-3<\/sup>d<sup>-1<\/sup>\u00a0i 370 gNm<sup>-3<\/sup>d<sup>-1<\/sup>),\u00a0 la millora de\u00a0<strong>l\u2019efici\u00e8ncia electroqu\u00edmica dels processos<\/strong>\u00a0(5 Wm<sup>-3<\/sup>), i la identificaci\u00f3 de les\u00a0<strong>limitacions del sistema pel que fa a disseny i a material.\u00a0<\/strong>Tot aix\u00f2 ha culminat, d\u2019una banda, en la construcci\u00f3 d\u2019un sistema bioelectroqu\u00edmic amb una capacitat de 65L per avaluar l\u2019aplicabilitat de la tecnologia i, de l\u2019altra banda, en la\u00a0<strong>patent industrial WO\/2015\/150610 d\u2019Abengoa Water<\/strong>, \u00a0de la qual quatre investigadors del LEQUIA \u2013 entre ells, l\u2019Anna Vilajeliu \u2013 en s\u00f3n inventors<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section
