El 2015 la concentraci\u00f3 mitjana de di\u00f2xid de carboni, el principal gas d\u2019efecte hivernacle, va superar per primera vegada les 400 parts per mili\u00f3 (ppm). Una barrera simb\u00f2lica que fa m\u00e9s urgent la necessitat de trobar solucions tecnol\u00f2giques que reverteixin aquest creixement sostingut. Algunes, com la captura i emmagatzematge de CO<sub>2<\/sub>, s\u00f3n mesures pal\u00b7liatives no exemptes de controv\u00e8rsia. D\u2019altres, com el desenvolupament d\u2019alternatives a la crema de combustibles f\u00f2ssils, van a l\u2019arrel del problema i proposen canvis substancials en els nostres sistemes energ\u00e8tics i industrials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aquest \u00e9s el cas dels <strong>sistemes bioelectroqu\u00edmics<\/strong> (en angl\u00e8s, <em>bioelectrochemical systems<\/em> o <em>BES<\/em>), una tecnologia emergent que combina processos biol\u00f2gics i electroqu\u00edmics, i que ha despertat un gran inter\u00e8s per part de la comunitat cient\u00edfica internacional en els \u00faltims deu anys . Els BES es aprofiten la capacitat que tenen determinats microorganismes de facilitar processos d\u2019oxidaci\u00f3\/reducci\u00f3 a partir de l\u2019alliberaci\u00f3\/captura d\u2019electrons d\u2019un el\u00e8ctrode. Podrien, doncs, <strong>reduir el di\u00f2xid de carboni a compostos d\u2019inter\u00e8s energ\u00e8tic (com ara el met\u00e0) i\/o industrial (diversos compostos org\u00e0nics de valor afegit)<\/strong>, i abordar el problema del canvi clim\u00e0tic i l\u2019energia d\u2019una manera integrada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La tesi doctoral de <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lequia1.reverter.cat\/ca\/presentacio\/equip\/investigadors-predoctorals\/item\/203-pau-batlle-vilanova.html\">Pau Batlle Vilanova<\/a><\/strong> confirma que els BES s\u00f3n una tecnologia molt prometedora per reduir i transformar les emissions de CO<sub>2<\/sub>. L\u2019investigador ha estudiat bacteris capa\u00e7os d\u2019utilitzar l\u2019el\u00e8ctrode com a donador d\u2019electrons (bioc\u00e0tode) i dur a terme la reducci\u00f3 del di\u00f2xid de carboni. Els resultants demostren que la <strong>producci\u00f3 d\u2019hidrogen<\/strong> a escala laboratori <strong>com a compost intermedi <\/strong>\u00e9s clau, una dada molt interessant per l\u2019avantatge competitiu que suposaria obtenir hidrogen <em>in situ<\/em> i eliminar aix\u00ed la necessitat de transport i emmagatzematge. Pel que fa als <strong>productes finals<\/strong>, Pau Batlle ha aconseguit sintetitzar <strong>met\u00e0<\/strong> (que pot ser utilitzat com a combustible de vehicles o b\u00e9 injectat a la xarxa de gas) i <strong>compostos l\u00edquids org\u00e0nics de dos (\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic) i quatre (\u00e0cid but\u00edric) carbonis<\/strong>. Val a dir que tant l\u2019\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic com el but\u00edric tenen inter\u00e8s per la ind\u00fastria aliment\u00e0ria i farmac\u00e8utica, i s\u00f3n precursors de dos importants combustibles, l\u2019etanol i el butanol.
