A algunes zones geogr\u00e0fiques com Catalunya, les concentracions de nitrat excedeixen els l\u00edmits marcats per a la Organitzaci\u00f3 Mundial de la Salut (OMS) per al consum hum\u00e0 (50 mgNO3-\u00b7L-1\u00a0 o 11.29 mgN\u00b7L-1). Les tecnologies disponibles\u00a0 a l\u2019actualitat (osmosi inversa, electrodi\u00e0lisi inversa i intercanvi i\u00f2nic) poden reduir el contingut de nitrats per sota de l\u00edmit legal per aigua potable. Tanmateix, el seu alt cost energ\u00e8tic i ambiental &#8211; concentren els nitrats en salmorra de dif\u00edcil tractament &#8211; en limiten la utilitzaci\u00f3. Per tot aix\u00f2, cal cercar noves tecnologies que permetin el tractament de nitrats a un cost econ\u00f2mic i ambiental assequible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La tesi \u201c<strong>Bioremediation of nitrate-polluted groundwater using bioelectrochemical systems<\/strong>\u201d de l\u2019investigador del LEQUIA\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lequia1.reverter.cat\/ca\/presentacio\/equip\/investigadors-predoctorals\/item\/210-narcis-pous-rodriguez.html\">Narc\u00eds Pous i Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>\u00a0s\u2019ha centrat en investigar la utilitzaci\u00f3 de sistemes bioelectroqu\u00edmics (BES) per al tractament d\u2019aig\u00fces subterr\u00e0nies contaminades amb nitrats. Els sistemes bioelectroqu\u00edmics aprofiten la capacitat de determinats microorganismes per a realitzar processos d\u2019oxidaci\u00f3\/reducci\u00f3 a base d\u2019alliberar\/captar electrons d\u2019un el\u00e8ctrode. Narc\u00eds Pous ha investigat l\u2019\u00fas de bact\u00e8ries per a utilitzar l\u2019el\u00e8ctrode com a donador d\u2019electrons (bioc\u00e0tode) i reduir aix\u00ed el nitrat a dinitrogen gas, que \u00e9s un compost inert. Com a resultat, s\u2019ha desenvolupat un proc\u00e9s patentat pel grup LEQUIA\u00a0(WO\/2014\/082989) que tracta els nitrats a altes velocitats de desnitrificaci\u00f3 (fins a 700 gN\u00b7m-3NCC\u00b7d-1) i a un cost energ\u00e8tic competitiu (0.68\u00b710-2\u00a0\u2013 1.27\u00b710-2\u00a0kWh\u00b7gN-1tractat). Tot aix\u00f2, sense generar fangs ni addicionar subst\u00e0ncies qu\u00edmiques.
