This book introduces the 3R concept applied to wastewater treatment and resource recovery under a double perspective. Firstly, it deals with\u00a0innovative technologies<\/strong>\u00a0leading to:\u00a0Reducing<\/strong>\u00a0energy requirements, space and impacts;\u00a0Reusing<\/strong>\u00a0water and sludge of sufficient quality; and\u00a0Recovering<\/strong>\u00a0resources such as energy, nutrients, metals and chemicals, including biopolymers.\u00a0\u00a0Besides targeting effective C,N&P removal, other issues such as organic micropollutants, gases and odours emissions are considered. Most of the technologies analysed have been tested at pilot- or at full-scale. Tools and methods for their Economic, Environmental, Legal and Social impact assessment are described.<\/p>\n

The 3R concept is also applied to\u00a0Innovative Processes<\/strong>\u00a0design, considering different levels of innovation:\u00a0Retrofitting<\/strong>, where novel units are included in more conventional processes;\u00a0Re-Thinking<\/strong>, which implies a substantial flowsheet modification; and\u00a0Re-Imagining<\/strong>, with completely new conceptions. Tools are presented for Modelling, Optimising\u00a0and Selecting\u00a0the most suitable plant layout for each particular scenario from a holistic technical,\u00a0economic and environmental point of view.<\/p>\n
