depuradores d\u2019aig\u00fces residuals (EDARs) tenen un paper crucial en la protecci\u00f3 de la salut p\u00fablica, ja que tracten l\u2019aigua residual per poder retornar-la en bon estat al medi natural. Tanmateix, tamb\u00e9 consumeixen grans quantitats d\u2019energia. D\u2019acord amb algunes estimacions, el tractament d\u2019aigua representa el 3% del consum el\u00e8ctric global, amb les emissions de gasos d\u2019efecte hivernacle i els costos econ\u00f2mics que aix\u00f2 comporta.<\/p><p>En aquest context, l\u2019empresa GS INIMA, un referent mundial en el sector d\u2019aigua, est\u00e0 treballant en una nova configuraci\u00f3 de tractament d\u2019aigua a les EDARs que redueixi el consum d\u2019energia (gr\u00e0cies a una menor necessitat d\u2019aportaci\u00f3 d\u2019oxigen), i optimitzi la producci\u00f3 i recuperaci\u00f3 del biog\u00e0s resultant de la digesti\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bia dels fangs (a trav\u00e9s d\u2019un menor consum de mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica en el proc\u00e9s de desnitrificaci\u00f3).<\/p><p>Aquesta configuraci\u00f3, patentada i registrada amb el nom comercial de PROGRAMOX\u00ae, consta d\u2019un primer reactor de fangs actius d\u2019alta c\u00e0rrega (en angl\u00e8s, <em>high-rate activated sludge<\/em> o HRAS) en el qual la mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica de l\u2019aigua es redirigeix a la l\u00ednia dels fangs per afavorir la producci\u00f3 de biog\u00e0s. A continuaci\u00f3, t\u00e9 lloc una eliminaci\u00f3 aut\u00f2trofa del nitrogen en dues etapes: la primera, un reactor de biomassa aer\u00f2bia granular (en angl\u00e8s, <em>aerobic granular sludge <\/em>o AGS<em>)<\/em> adaptat a un proc\u00e9s de nitritaci\u00f3 parcial (en angl\u00e8s, <em>partial nitritation<\/em> o PN) i la segona, \u00a0un reactor <em>anammox<\/em> (anaerobic ammonium oxidation). L\u2019objectiu final, estalviar energia i fer que el proc\u00e9s de depuraci\u00f3 sigui m\u00e9s sostenible, tant mediambientalment com econ\u00f2micament.<\/p><p>Per assolir aquest objectiu, GS INIMA ha col\u00b7laborat amb el Laboratori d\u2019Enginyeria Qu\u00edmica i Ambiental de la Universitat de Girona (LEQUIA), un dels grups de recerca pioners a Espanya en l\u2019estudi dels tractaments PN-AGS i <em>anammox<\/em>. La tesi d\u2019Oriol Carb\u00f3, centrada en aquests dos processos, tenia dos objectius cient\u00edfics: 1) optimitzar aquests processos per garantir la seva robustesa i replicabilitat, i 2) quantificar el consum energ\u00e8tic i el potencial de recuperaci\u00f3 d\u2019energia de l\u2019EDAR. \u00a0L\u2019investigador va iniciar el treball de recerca en un reactor AGS als laboratoris del LEQUIA. Despr\u00e9s va realitzar m\u00e9s experiments en una planta pilot especialment constru\u00efda per estudiar tota la configuraci\u00f3 PROGRAMOX\u00ae (HRAS + PN-AGS + <em>anammox<\/em>) i capa\u00e7 de tractar 1.5m<sup>3<\/sup> per dia. La planta es va ubicar a l\u2019EDAR de La Garriga i es va operar amb aigua residual d\u2019aquesta instal\u00b7laci\u00f3.<\/p><p>Els resultats obtinguts han perm\u00e8s tant al grup de recerca com a l\u2019empresa adquirir nous coneixements i experteses en els processos investigats. De fet, actualment GS INIMA est\u00e0 treballant en la construcci\u00f3 d\u2019una nova planta de demostraci\u00f3 per validar la configuraci\u00f3 PROGRAMOX\u00ae a escala real. Al reactor AGS, una purga selectiva de dalt del llit de fangs decantats va demostrar ser una estrat\u00e8gia exitosa per sostenir la formaci\u00f3 de gr\u00e0nuls aerobis al sistema. Tot i aix\u00ed, una completa granulaci\u00f3 de la biomassa no va ser crucial per al correcte funcionament del reactor. Mantenir una bona decantabilitat (SVI, &lt; 100 mL\/g) amb una barreja de gr\u00e0nuls i flocs va resultar ser suficient per eliminar la mat\u00e8ria org\u00e0nica i reprimir la formaci\u00f3 de NO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>&#8211;<\/sup>. Es va aconseguir una PN estable a la l\u00ednia d\u2019aigua tractant l\u2019efluent d\u2019un HRAS. Es va reprimir l\u2019activitat dels bacteris nitrit-oxidants (NOB) gr\u00e0cies a la producci\u00f3 d\u2019\u00e0cid nitr\u00f3s lliure (FNA) al reactor. Pel que fa al reactor <em>anammox<\/em>, es va aconseguir un efluent amb una qualitat adequada (TN &lt; 8 mg\/L) controlant la conversi\u00f3 de la pr\u00e8via PN a ratis NO<sub>2<\/sub><sup>&#8211;<\/sup>\/NH<sub>4<\/sub><sup>+<\/sup> inferiors (0.8 g N\/g N) del te\u00f2ric 1.32 g N\/g N, implicant un requeriment d\u2019oxigen inferior. Finalment, el balan\u00e7 energ\u00e8tic realitzat indica que amb la nova configuraci\u00f3 PROGRAMOX\u00ae es podria assolir un 44% d\u2019estalvi energ\u00e8tic (kWh\/m<sup>3<\/sup>) en les EDARs, la qual cosa podria tenir un impacte significatiu en la sostenibilitat d\u2019aquestes infraestructures.<\/p><p>Aquesta tesi s\u2019ha desenvolupat en el marc d\u2019un projecte de doctorat industrial cofinan\u00e7at pel Ministeri de Ci\u00e8ncia, i ha tingut dos directors a l\u2019entorn acad\u00e8mic (els Drs. Jes\u00fas Colprim i Albert Magr\u00ed) i una directora a l\u2019entorn empresarial (la Dra.
