recursos valuosos contribueix a la descarbonitzaci\u00f3 de la ind\u00fastria i a la promoci\u00f3 de l\u2019economia circular.\u00a0 Els processos biol\u00f2gics principals de conversi\u00f3 del CO<sub>2<\/sub> s\u00f3n l\u2019<strong>electro-s\u00edntesi microbiana <\/strong>(en angl\u00e8s, <em>microbial electrosynthesis<\/em> o <strong><em>MES<\/em><\/strong>) i la <strong>fermentaci\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bica<\/strong> (en angl\u00e8s, <em>anaerobic fermentation<\/em> o <strong><em>AF<\/em><\/strong>). La MES \u00e9s particularment prometedora, ja que no consumeix reactius qu\u00edmics i proporciona energia reductora <em>in situ<\/em>, que es pot obtenir de fonts renovables. Fins ara, els estudis de MES s\u2019han centrat majorit\u00e0riament en la conversi\u00f3 del CO<sub>2<\/sub> a \u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic o met\u00e0. Aquesta tesi doctoral fa un pas endavant i apunta a compostos m\u00e9s valuosos com l\u2019etanol i \u00e0cids carbox\u00edlics de cadena m\u00e9s llarga (\u00e0cid but\u00edric i caproic). A m\u00e9s, estudia per primer cop l\u2019acoblament de l\u2019electro-s\u00edntesi microbiana amb processos de fermentaci\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bica i la implementaci\u00f3 d\u2019un sistema basat en membranes. L\u2019objectiu \u00e9s incrementar els ratis de producci\u00f3, reduir el consum d\u2019energia i millorar la selectivitat dels productes mitjan\u00e7ant l\u2019optimitzaci\u00f3 de les condicions operacionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019etanol <\/strong>s\u2019utilitza com a combustible i dissolvent qu\u00edmic, i en la s\u00edntesi de diversos compostos org\u00e0nics, entre altres aplicacions. Aquesta tesi es va centrar en la producci\u00f3 bioqu\u00edmica d\u2019etanol a partir de CO<sub>2<\/sub> via solventog\u00e8nesi (amb esp\u00e8cies <em>Clostridium<\/em>). La Meritxell Romans va investigar a escala laboratori nous materials per la cel\u00b7la (acer inoxidable), configuracions optimitzades de reactors (cel\u00b7les el\u00e8ctricament eficients apilades, amb dist\u00e0ncia curta entre el\u00e8ctrodes) i noves estrat\u00e8gies operacionals. A m\u00e9s a m\u00e9s, va implementar un sistema de control autom\u00e0tic. Aix\u00f2 va permetre definir els par\u00e0metres operacionals \u00f2ptims per afavorir la producci\u00f3 d\u2019etanol: pH baix (&lt; 5.0), pressions parcials de CO<sub>2<\/sub> baixes (pCO<sub>2<\/sub> &lt; 0.1 atm), pressions parcials d\u2019hidrogen altes (pH<sub>2<\/sub> &gt; 2.0 atm) i concentracions d\u2019\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic superiors a 6.0 g L<sup>-1<\/sup>. Aplicant aquests coneixements, la investigadora va assolir una producci\u00f3 cont\u00ednua d\u2019etanol de 777,7 mg per litre de cel\u00b7la i dia (mg L<sup>-1<\/sup> d<sup>-1<\/sup>) i una selectivitat de producci\u00f3 del 60%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Els \u00e0cids but\u00edric i caproic <\/strong>s\u2019utilitzen per produir nombrosos compostos per la ind\u00fastria qu\u00edmica, energ\u00e8tica i farmac\u00e8utica. De manera an\u00e0loga a l\u2019etanol, Meritxell Romans va investigar l\u2019\u00fas de cel\u00b7les de dist\u00e0ncia curta entre el\u00e8ctrodes per produir \u00e0cid but\u00edric a partir de CO<sub>2<\/sub> i va assolir una selectivitat del 78% amb una demanda d\u2019energia de 34.6 kWh kg<sup>-1<\/sup>, un valor dos cops inferior al que s\u2019havia requerit amb anterioritat. D\u2019altra banda, la investigadora va dissenyar i desenvolupar un nou sistema integrat de dues etapes en el qual l\u2019etanol i l\u2019\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic que es produeixen en una cel\u00b7la d\u2019electro-s\u00edntesi microbiana actuen com a substrat en un proc\u00e9s de fermentaci\u00f3 anaer\u00f2bica per elongar a \u00e0cids but\u00edric i caproic. Aquesta configuraci\u00f3 permet obtenir \u00e0cid caproic a un rati de 0.74 g L<sup>-1 <\/sup>d<sup>-1<\/sup>. Finalment, va dissenyar un sistema innovador de membrana submergida en un fermentador per dosificar l\u2019etanol i l\u2019\u00e0cid ac\u00e8tic amb membranes no poroses, assolint una selectivitat del 94% i ratis de producci\u00f3 de 3.1 g L<sup>-1<\/sup> d<sup>-1<\/sup>. La invenci\u00f3 ha estat patentada.<\/p>\n<p>Aquests resultats tan notables contribuiran a escalar i comercialitzar les tecnologies d\u2019electro-s\u00edntesi microbiana i la seva integraci\u00f3 amb processos de fermentaci\u00f3 per convertir el CO<sub>2<\/sub> en compostos valuosos. L\u2019impacte d\u2019aquest enfocament circular \u00e9s alt, tant en relaci\u00f3 a la descarbonitzaci\u00f3 de la ind\u00fastria com a la reducci\u00f3 de la depend\u00e8ncia dels recursos f\u00f2ssils. La tesi ha estat dirigida pel Dr. Sebasti\u00e0 Puig i la Dra.
