Algunes fonts estimen que hi ha m\u00e9s de set milions de membranes d\u2019OI instal\u00b7lades a tot el m\u00f3n. La fabricaci\u00f3 d\u2019un \u00fanic m\u00f2dul d\u2019aquestes membranes requereix 12 kg de pl\u00e0stic i emet 85 kg de di\u00f2xid de carboni equivalents. Per tot aix\u00f2, promoure la seva reutilitzaci\u00f3 i allargar el seu cicle de vida \u2013 actualment, entre 5 i 10 anys \u2013 \u00e9s clau per assolir un model de tractament d\u2019aigua m\u00e9s circular i sostenible.<\/p>\n<p>Aquesta tesi ha estudiat les <strong>limitacions operacionals de la vida de membranes d\u2019OI<\/strong> com ara l\u2019assecat, l\u2019\u00fas industrial i l\u2019exposici\u00f3 qu\u00edmica amb la finalitat de 1) entendre millor el seu impacte en el rendiment de les membranes i 2) determinar si aquests factors en limiten el reciclatge. L\u2019enfocament tamb\u00e9 es va aplicar a les membranes d\u2019osmosi directa (OD). Els resultats demostren que:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>L\u2019assecat redueix significativament la permeabilitat (fins al 65%). Tot i aix\u00f2, despr\u00e9s de la immersi\u00f3 en etanol es produeix una recuperaci\u00f3 parcial, la qual cosa indica que el dany a la capa de PA pot ser reversible. En canvi, en el cas de la capa de PSf, l\u2019assecat provoca danys irreversibles (fins al 90% de p\u00e8rdua de permeabilitat), incloent esquerdes a la superf\u00edcie.<\/li>\n<li>L\u2019\u00fas industrial comporta una degradaci\u00f3 del rendiment de les membranes, sobretot degut a la compactaci\u00f3 del porus en la capa de PSf i una degradaci\u00f3 parcial de la capa de PA, confirmant l\u2019impacte de l\u2019\u00fas prolongat en la integritat de les membranes.<\/li>\n<li>Un protocol en tres etapes amb clor lliure per degradar selectivament la capa de PA permet obtenir membranes amb propietats similars a les de nanofiltraci\u00f3 (NF) i ultrafiltraci\u00f3 (UF), confirmant la viabilitat de transformar membranes d\u2019OI al final de la seva vida en membranes amb diferents propietats de separaci\u00f3.<\/li>\n<li>Tot i que les membranes ofereixen bona resist\u00e8ncia a valors de pH \u00e0cids, neutres i b\u00e0sics, l\u2019addici\u00f3 de 10 ppm de clor lliure provoca la seva degradaci\u00f3, especialment en condicions neutres i b\u00e0siques.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bianca Zappulla tamb\u00e9 va explorar un <strong>tractament oxidatiu qu\u00edmic alternatiu amb oz\u00f3 pel reciclatge de membranes<\/strong>. A altes dosis, l\u2019oz\u00f3 va eliminar tant \u00a0la capa de PA com la de PSf, un comportament diferent del clor lliure, oferint aix\u00ed una estrat\u00e8gia prometedora per a la reutilitzaci\u00f3 de la capa de suport de poli\u00e8ster. A exposicions baixes d\u2019oz\u00f3, el m\u00e8tode va resultar efectiu per convertir membranes totalment arom\u00e0tiques, mentre que les semi-arom\u00e0tiques van oferir una resist\u00e8ncia superior.<\/p>\n<p>Finalment, la investigadora va dur a terme una prova a escala pilot per <strong>validar el potencial de reutilitzaci\u00f3 de membranes transformades<\/strong>. Es van convertir membranes noves per\u00f2 descartades, aix\u00ed com membranes d\u2019OI al final de la seva vida \u00fatil, en membranes tipus NF i UF; i es van provar en un sistema de membranes per gravetat (GDM) tractant efluents d\u2019una depuradora municipal. Els resultats van demostrar que les membranes d\u2019OI transformades (reconvertides en membranes tipus UF) produ\u00efen aigua apta per a usos no potables. A m\u00e9s, l\u2019estudi va destacar el potencial de les membranes tipus NF per a l\u2019\u00fas en sistemes GDM, tot i amb la limitaci\u00f3 operativa de requerir rentats diaris per mantenir el rendiment.<\/p>\n<p>En suma, aquesta recerca aporta nous coneixements cient\u00edfics sobre l\u2019operaci\u00f3 i el reciclatge de les membranes OI\/OD que poden contribuir a allargar el seu temps de vida i a augmentar el seu potencial de reciclatge.
