Our PhD researcher Emma Company Masó from LEQUIA had the opportunity to present her research on nutrient recovery through electrochemical precipitation—a sustainable upgrade for wastewater treatment plants—at the Iberimet Meeting of the National Network of Microbial Electrochemical Technologies (METs) last week in the beautiful city of Segovia!

Great work, Emma!

SPORE-MEDPRIMA Partnership at IWA RR 2025 Conference!

We’re proud to see our PhD researcher Emma Company Masó LEQUIA who presented last week her work on K-struvite recovery via electrochemical precipitation—a key step toward more sustainable, circular wastewater treatment.

On May 14 and 15, SPORE-MED project members gathered in Marrakesh for the third General Assembly and Scientific Board Meeting to discuss project progress.
The local hosts, the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P), took the members on a tour of their experimental fields, which are ready to test the recovery of nutrients from wastewater treatment at UM6P.
It was evident that promising technologies for wastewater treatment are being developed, and the reuse of nutrients in agriculture appears to be a relevant alternative for recycling in Morocco and beyond.

Exciting progress in the SPORE-MED project! 🚀
Construction of the PROGRAMOX plant at the Terrassa wastewater treatment plant is underway, marking a significant step towards validating this groundbreaking technology at TRL 8 – meaning it’s ready for real-world implementation! 💡
PROGRAMOX, a high performance activated sludge process, dramatically improves the removal of solids, organics, and nutrients while minimizing energy consumption. ♻️ It also increases energy recovery from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by diverting more organic matter to anaerobic digestion. ⚡
Kudos to GS Inima Environment team!!!

Exciting news! The Nanobubbler System is now successfully installed by Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης – Technical University of Crete (leader Nicolas KALOGERAKIS) at the Gerani-WWTP in Chania, Greece.

🌊 This innovative tech enhances microplastic removal by generating micro & nanobubbles, making separation more efficient. ♻️ A step forward for cleaner water!

Exciting progress at the Sfax North WWTP, where we identified the location for installing our SPORE-MED pilot system. It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Mohamed Ben Makhlouf from ONAS, who is leading the collaboration with the Institut Supérieur de Biotechnologie de Sfax (Ksibi Mohamed) for the SPORE-MED PRIMA Partnership, and Mrs. Manel Bouchaira, the WWTP manager.

During our visit, we agreed on the exact spot for the pilot, set the point for pumping wastewater to produce struvite, and determined the placement of sensors for monitoring pathogens and nutrients in collaboration with Adasa Sistemas. This marks an important step forward, ensuring everything is in place before moving ahead.

Looking forward to the next phase!

Our partner ICTA-UAB is organizing a Life Cycle Assessment Symposium on June 4-6, in which SPORE-MED will participate.

The call for abstracts is already open: https://www.sostenipra.cat/en/lca_symposium/

We’re looking forward to your participation!

We are delighted to see our partners driving innovation in water management!

During the NATMed Prima Project presentation in Seville, Adasa Sistemas highlighted the SPORE-MED project, fostering synergies with other PRIMA Partnership projects and promoting sustainable solutions for urban wastewater treatment.

The partners of Sanitary Environmental Engineering Division (SEED) of the Università degli Studi di Salerno and the Institut Supérieur de Biotechnologie de Sfax held their last operational meeting before the operation of the living membrane bioreactors.

This innovative system will serve as a secondary treatment for wastewater, targeting the removal of pharmaceutical residues and microplastics—a crucial step towards cleaner water and a healthier environment. 🌍💧Great work by the team of Vincenzo Naddeo (納文 森) and Ksibi Mohamed! Exciting times ahead as we move towards implementation! Stay tuned for updates on this important milestone.

On February 5th, Sebastià Puig, the co-coordinator of SPORE-MED, gave a keynote speech on electro bioremediation at the 1st African ISMET Conference.
