Sebastià Puig, new LEQUIA director

Sebastià Puig Broch has been appointed director of LEQUIA research group replacing Maria Dolors Balaguer Condom, who continues to be one of its researchers. This generational change will further boost the group’s research and transfer, especially in terms of international projection.

Sebastià Puig has been an Associate Professor “Serra Húnter” at the University of Girona since 2019. His research within the environmental biotechnology field seeks to give a second life to contaminated waters, organic waste and carbon dioxide rich streams that are difficult to treat, by means of bioelectrochemical platforms. He currently enjoys an ICREA Acadèmia grant and is included in the Stanford Elsevier list of the 2% best scientists worldwide within their field.

The Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (LEQUIA) is a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Girona founded in 1992 and renowned for its activity within the water field and on the conversion of carbon dioxide with biological processes. It currently integrates 50 people, including university professors, pre- and postdoctoral researchers, and support technicians. The group has always stood out for its transfer activity, with two spinoff companies and numerous contracts with business organisations.
